  1. The Democratic People's Republic of North Korea was founded on
  2. May 1, 1948 in the zone occupied by Russian troops after World
  3. War II.  In 1950, its armies invaded and tried to conquer the
  4. south.  After 3 years of fighting, with Chinese and U.S.
  5. intervention a cease fire was proclaimed.  All industry was
  6. nationalized in the late 1940s and has grown substantially
  7. mainly due to rich mineral deposits and ample hydroelectric
  8. power.  Two North Korean Army officers were sentenced to death by
  9. Burmese authorities after they confessed to the October 9, 1983
  10. bombing which killed 17, including 4 South Korean cabinet
  11. ministers in Rangoon.                      @
